High-Capacity Transport
Optical and packet transport technologies that carry large volumes of traffic across the backbone.
Exploring the backbone infrastructure that powers scalable and efficient data transmission across the network.
BCN Lab (Broadband Core Networks) is a laboratory under Oasis Lab dedicated to research on broadband core networks: the backbone infrastructure that carries data across the network at scale. Every digital service ultimately depends on this core to move traffic quickly, reliably, and efficiently between users, platforms, and data centers.
We explore how backbone networks are designed, engineered, and operated, covering high-capacity transport, IP routing and switching, traffic engineering, capacity planning, and network resilience. Our approach focuses on making the core scalable enough to grow with demand while remaining efficient in how it uses capacity, energy, and operational effort.
At BCN, research goes hand in hand with experimentation. Members build emulated network topologies, analyze traffic behavior, test routing and transport designs, and measure performance under different load and failure conditions. The results are studies, prototypes, and recommendations that can be applied to real backbone environments.
The laboratory is open to students, lecturers, and industry partners who want to collaborate, from joint research and final-project supervision to technical training and case studies based on real backbone network needs.
